Designed by the Vevey-born architects Ernest Burnat and Charles Nicati, Hôtel National de Montreux was built in 1874 in a style inspired by French chateaux of the Renaissance, featuring high roofs and brick chimneys. Hôtel National owes its spectacular view over the Dents-du-Midi to the architect Eugène Jost, who added an extra floor to the building in 1898. (Two years before this, he also built the shopping arcade below, offering hotel guests an opportunity to stroll and browse the shops.) In the last quarter of the 20th century, Hôtel National was closed and the building sadly abandoned. Now, it has undergone its own renaissance, with conversion into a luxury residential complex. Construction and restoration work is now complete, and the building has become 77 condominium apartments. These modern, spacious and comfortable living spaces all enjoy an unobstructed view over Lake Geneva and the Dents-du-Midi. The centrepiece is a spectacular tiled stove with open fire designed by an Italian craftsman. No two tiles are identical; they are entirely hand-painted and represent landscapes, flowers and plants. Built-in bookshelves over a large area of the walls accommodate the owner’s books and objets d’art. Narrow console tables add a playful touch; one of them is topped with a rare 17th-century Venetian mirror.

Two sideboards have been created in the dining room, and an office is concealed behind a mural-painted door. Mirrored niches in the walls make the room seem larger, and house a beautiful pair of 19th-century statues, l’Eté and l’Hiver by Georges Van der Straeten (1856-1930). Above, a fabulous chandelier of silver and gold roses hangs from a panelled ceiling, almost completely covering a vermilion Florentine table and chairs. The walls have a mineral-based textured coating and are painted with Florentine designs.

The guest bedroom is a welcoming nest and also includes an office in a recess. The walls and floor of the bathroom are covered with tooled moisture-proof leather.

A mural along a hallway evokes a Mediterranean garden and is reflected by mirrors. The master office is painted in red lacquer and the cupboard doors are decorated with 19th-century engravings of Napoleonic soldiers. The bathroom gives directly on to this room.

The master bedroom is a symphony of softness and leads on to a vast terrace. A beautiful painted dressing table stands between the room’s two large windows. Two 18th-century engravings on blue paper hang above the bed.

Italian painters have taken extraordinary care in creating murals and decoration to lighten or embellish the furniture and ceilings, as well as to conceal doors, in tones that harmonise with the whole, giving the interior an effect of pure luxury.

Two mosaic tableaux decorate the bathroom. The pieces of mosaic were hand cut, one by one, to create the desired design. This is the height of comfort.
